“Summer Rain” had me at hello. Offering a stunning image of Jackson Square, the photograph immediately drew me in with its spell of New Orleans timelessness and mystery that I hadn’t experienced — or even imagined — before.
If you, too, are looking for magical portrayals of New Orleans that go beyond the typical tourist snaps, then Photo Works, in the heart of the French Quarter at 521 St. Ann, is the place for you.
This beautifully arranged studio showcases the talent of Louis Sahuc, a master at capturing the essence of the French Quarter. When you visit his studio, “Summer Rain” will likely be one of the first photographic works of art you’ll notice when you walk through the door — and then, beyond, dozens of other images will compete for your attention, each showing off a unique view of the area’s amazing architecture, colorful characters, or hidden passageways. In both black and white and color, you’ll find views of windows and walkways, balustrades and balconies, wrought iron gates and big brass bands — all depicting their unique contribution to making the French Quarter a place like no other.
Once inside, you’ll also discover fascinating background information on the master photographer/artist behind these beautiful images. Louis Sahuc, a native New Orleanian and a long-time resident and preservationist of Jackson Square, has been doing the work he loves for most of his life, inspired by the early days when he first fell in love with the city in the 1940s while traveling around the area with his father.
He has continued that love affair by producing award-winning photography beginning in 1972 and still works his magic today. B&W Magazine has called Louis Sahuc “a master of romantic impressionist photography.” Mr. Sahuc is also a contributor to the highly-regarded book Orleans Embrace with The Secret Gardens of the Vieux Carre, a vivid narrative and visual portrayal of the French Quarter. You can learn more about Sahuc and view his collection of French Quarter images at his website: http://photoworksneworleans.com/.
Whether you’re a local searching for a touchstone of what you love most about the place you live, or you’re a visitor wanting to take some New Orleans magic back home with you, you’re sure to find the perfect image at Photo Works.
